OTHER MEMBERS

OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM

COMETS, METEORS AND ASTEROIDS

Hello there, learner! Welcome to this website! Here, you can explore and study the topic regarding other members of the solar system which include comets, meteors, and asteroids. Isn’t it exciting to explore this topic? In your previous year level, which is in your sixth grade, right? You have discussed The Solar System in which you were able to discover and get to know the different planets as well as the sun! In this website, we will extend your knowledge about the solar system not just by reading pure text-based material but by exploring its other members through the use of videos, pictures, and activities that are attached within this website. We hope that this material can help you have a deep and better understanding of the other members of the solar system. Are you ready? Let’s start!

Introduction to Comets, Meteors, and Asteroids

Have you heard about news or even rumors about comets and asteroids that hit the Earth and how their impacts affect our planet? Have you ever asked yourself if how often does a comet or an asteroid hit the Earth? Well, recent advances in Space Technology have allowed scientists coming from different background such as physics, chemistry, biology and geology to collaborate in studying the Near-Earth Objects (NEO) such as comets ad asteroids. With more powerful telescopes and space probes, the study of comets and asteroids provides more clues about the origin of our solar system. Over the past few years, amateurs and professional astronomers have discovered several NEOs that came close to Earth and one of them is the Asteroid 2012 DA14. It made a very close approach to Earth as it orbited the Sun on February 16,2012 (Philippine Time). In the morning of the same day, an asteroid entered and exploded over Lake Chebarkul in Russia hurting about 1,000 people in the process. These two events triggered superstitions, fears, and doomsday prophecies held by different cultures. But do these things have scientific basis?

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of characteristics of comets, meteors, and asteroids;

  2. Explain the difference between comets, meteors, and asteroids;

  3. Describe how impact craters are formed when a comet or asteroid hits the Earth based on a simulation;

  4. Explain how meteor, meteoroid, and meteorite are related; and

  5. Provide sound, scientific evidence to support one’s stand about superstitions on comets, meteors and asteroids.
